Guest House

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture,

still, treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.

by Rumi

Take a moment now to pause, close your eyes and try to identify the emotions you are feeling right now. Perhaps you are feeling fear, embarrassment, anger, sadness, guilt, inadequacy. Or maybe joy, love, contentment, pride, cheerfulness, happiness. Once you have identified that emotion, don’t judge it as good or bad, but instead simply be present with it and…

  • Notice how it manifests in your body

  • Pay attention to the thoughts that it may be creating

  • Consider what it might be here to tell you

Before opening your eyes, take a moment to express gratitude to that emotion for the lessons and guidance it has provided. Then open your eyes and consider how you might use this insight in your life.
