Extended Exhale Breath

Here is another breathing technique from the New York Times best selling book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, by James Nestor.

  • Breathe in for three seconds then exhale for four seconds

  • Then breathe in for the same 3 seconds and exhale for 5 seconds

  • Then breathe in for 3 seconds and exhale for 6 seconds

  • Continue this 3 second inhale and extension of the exhale by one second for as long as you can until it is uncomfortable

The intention of this technique is to breathe less which increases our VO2 max, which can not only boost athletic stamina but also help us live long, healthier lives.
